Looking for a great way to entertain the kids and stimulate their creative minds? The Houston Family Arts Center has just what you’re looking for!
The classic children’s performance, The Secret Garden, is sure to fascinate your children and reignite your own memorable childhood experiences as well!
The Secret Garden, directed by Sam Brown, is based on the 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The show opened on February 6th and will be playing through March 1st on the Garza Mainstage.
Those not familiar with the magical story of The Secret Garden are in for a wonderful surprise. The uplifting children’s classic is a “musical oasis of redemption and an odyssey of renewal.”
The story is based on an unlikely hero—spoiled, sickly, and troubled orphan Mary Lennox. She was born to selfish parents, too wrapped up in their own lives to give her the attention and care she needed. Mary becomes intrigued by the prospect of a forgotten garden next door, and her quest to find out the garden's secrets leads her on quite a journey.
The strong desire to discover long-lost secrets of the past begins to have an extremely positive effect upon Mary. Combined with the unlikely friendships she makes along the way, these fascinating discoveries bring Mary out of her shell and spark a newfound passion and enthusiasm for the world around her.
One of Brown’s favorite books since childhood, The Secret Garden has long been a project he has wanted to be a part of. He jumped at the opportunity to direct the play.
“Part of me has always been fascinated with the concept of magic being a real thing in the real world and this book has that in it,” he said. “I really like stories that focus on children and how they have to grow up in the midst of difficult circumstances. This is one of those shows that has a real amount of depth to it, as far as the children are concerned. Mary has to deal with so much in such a sudden and instantaneous time and it shows how she copes with it. That type of circumstance coupled with such a beautiful score is something very interesting to me.”
The Secret Garden is currently performing at the The Houston Family Arts Center through Sunday, March 1st.
