It might sound like a paradox, but you don’t have to feel blue to appreciate the genre. The spiritual, feel-good nature of the genre is sure to give any fan a lifteime of happy memories.
Over the last century, the blues genre has changed in many ways. Western Swing is one such outgrowth of the blues movement, and a genre that has become a staple in Texas blues festivals.
Western swing has influenced such genres as honky-tonk, rockabilly, and country rock. In addition, it has popularized electrically amplified instruments, the use of drums, and jazz and blues solo styles.
All too familiar with the art of Western Swing is Buddy Whittington, an American guitarist who will be headlining the blues festival this weekend. A lifelong Texan, Buddy Whittington became enamored with the sounds of the electric guitar and has worked hard over the years to perfect his craft. At the age of 14, he was already a part of the Dallas/Fort Worth music scene—he played regularly in the city’s clubs, writing many songs along the way.
Whittington’s self-titled solo CD was released in 2007, garnering very favorable reviews and considerable airplay. He is currently in the process of writing songs for his second solo release. The blues festival is the perfect chance to check out what Whittington has to offer.
Opening the event are The Honky Tonk Zeroes from Fort Worth, specializing in “outlaw Texas country” music. Other special guests include “kings of boogie” Rick Lee & the Night Owls and the Fabulous Rhythm Kings, “masters” of blues rock.
