Enjoy lively entertainment for the whole family at the 19th Annual Texas Lunar New Year Celebration! From lion dancers to martial arts, the festive event is sure to delight spectators as they witness a wide variety of must-see performances.
Every year, the festival brings the community together to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is a unique family-oriented event, attracting large numbers of people from every ethnic group. Last year’s celebration drew over 20,000 attendees from the many diverse communities of Houston.
The Lunar New Year is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. The calendar is inspired by agriculture, astronomy, the four seasons, and the “Five Elements”—metal, wood, water, fire and earth. The Chinese Zodiac plays a part in the lunar calendar as well. Animals are symbolically associated with each year on a 12-year cycle. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, 2015 is the Year of the Goat/Sheep.
The Annual Texas Lunar New Year celebration includes a series of festive international events at the company’s International Trade Center complex. Adding to the excitement are the many fun multi-cultural activities leading up to the main event.
The founding organization of the Texas Lunar New Year Festival is a multi-media communications company in Bellaire called Southern News Group, the largest Asian media company in the southwest. Southern News Group publishes daily Chinese newspapers with editions in major U.S. cities, a daily online newspaper edition, a digital television station, and much more.
For the festival, more than one hundred companies and organizations will team up with Southern News Group to sponsor the event. Some of these sponsors include the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Texas, the International Management District, ITV International Television, the International Press Club, and Southwestern National Bank. Working together, the companies offer a series of displays, food booths, entertainment, acrobats, lion dancers, and world-class Shaolin Temple Wushu martial arts demonstrations. There will also be games and door prizes for all ages.
The celebration takes place on Saturday, February 21st from 10:00 AM–6:00 PM at Discovery Green, a beautiful 12-acre park located in downtown Houston.
