Laurie Roddy is probably the definition of an Active Adult - the Cypress local has hiked over 300 miles to write the book, “60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Houston.” Any trail to be explored within Houston is likely to have left its mark in Roddy’s book, and the guide even includes trails in other cities like Galveston, Huntsville, and Beaumont.
The book is part of the series of “60 Hikes within 60 Miles,” but until Roddy took on the challenge there was nothing featured on Houston. Previously a sports and technical writer, Roddy was looking for a chance to write about her love of nature, when she found an ad looking for a nature writer. It then took Roddy nine months of trekking through state and city parks and wildlife preserves to pull it off.
Being out on a trail keeps Roddy energized and able to meet other like-minded people. “The only way to get people to love nature is to get them out into it,” she says in an interview with the Chronicle. Roddy believes that hiking is the best way for Houstonians to become more environmentally aware, and a perfect opportunity for wildlife lovers to discover birds and animals.
For Houstonians interested in getting started on their own hiking adventure, Roddy suggests the following favorite spots:
Easy hikes through dirt trails and paved paths, and plenty of amenities to rest at along the way. Pack a picnic, and stop by the Butterfly or Wild Flower Gardens.
This urban park has the best of beautiful nature and skyline views, and has a dog park for canine friends.
Find wildlife and get closer to nature in this forest and creek getaway.
