Witness Charles Dickens’ classic come to life on the Garza Main Stage! A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter old miser who transforms into a gentler, kindlier man through a series of supernatural events. After visitations by the ghost of his former business partner and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Yet to Come, Scrooge learns the true meaning of the season and the importance of spreading holiday cheer.
Dickens' Carol was first published in 1843 and is credited as one of the greatest influences in rejuvenating the old Christmas traditions of England. But while it brings to the reader images of light, joy, warmth, and life, it also brings strong and unforgettable images of darkness, despair, and death. A Christmas Carol remains popular –having never been out of print –and has been adapted many times to film, stage, opera, and other media.
In fact, Carol is responsible for popularizing many of the common holiday phrases we use today. The phrase "Merry Christmas" was widely adopted following the appearance of the story, and the name "Scrooge" and exclamation "Bah! Humbug!" have since entered the English language. However, the story's most powerful achievement is the influence it continues to exert upon its readers.
A Christmas Carol runs through Sunday, December 21st at the Houston Family Arts Center. Tickets range from $15 to $26. For more information, visit here.
