When Lone Star College Cy-Fair was opened in 2003, the goal was to educate 10,000 students each year. Just over ten years later, the school has more than doubled that number, breaking the 20,000 milestone this fall.
The 20,000+ students enrolled makes the Cy-Fair branch the largest of five in the Lone Star College system. All told, the Lone Star College system is home to over 75,000 students.
Lone Star College Cy-Fair President Dr. Audre Levy is excited about the milestone. “We have exceeded all expectations and are now four times the size of most community colleges,” Levy said.
Lone Star College provides many students with a valuable alternative to more expensive higher education opportunities statewide. LSC is also a very convenient option for those in the Houston area looking for continued education opportunities – the category in which Omar De La Cruz (student number 20,000) falls.
Omar De La Cruz didn’t go to college after high school. He served in the U.S. Navy for over twenty years and started his own business, Katy Custom Coolers, before enrolling at LSC this fall. “We are thrilled to have Mr. De La Cruz as part of the LSC Cy-Fair family,” said Levy. “[This] growth is a testament to the need in our community for high quality, affordable education options.”
