Teaching young children to cook is incredibly valuable. With help from Young Leaders, families can live The Vintage Lifestyle by teaching their kids important life skills while cooking up delicious dishes. Culinary lessons also fortify what children learn in school. Here’s how:
- Math. Recipes can be doubled or halved, which requires dividing and multiplying.
- Nutrition. Learning to cook introduces children to different ingredients and encourages them to try new fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods.
- Following directions. Recipes need to be followed closely, and in specific order. Whether children are baking cakes, performing science experiments or completing homework, attention to detail is very important.
- Measuring. Using the right amount of ingredients reinforces the importance of accuracy.
- Sensory awareness. Sometimes our kids put us on sensory overload, but cooking and baking introduces your bundle of joy to new textures, tastes, colors, odors, and more.
- Language skills. Following recipes improves literacy skills. Your children will be writing on the walls before you know it!
- Art. Cooking is an opportunity for self-expression and artistry. Making faces on pizza and pancakes, decorating pastries or baking a breadstick are great ways to bond with your family.
Inquisitive children will revel in the colors, tastes, textures and smells a happy kitchen has to offer. You’ll be amazed how quickly your picky eater gobbles up vegetables when they help prepare them!
