Northwest Houston to Become a More Walkable Place

Hike and bike in northwest Houston

Northwest Houston utility districts and neighborhoods have finalized a 20-year plan to bring new recreation opportunities to northwest Houston. The Cypress Creek Trails Master Plan outlines how to enhance and connect current trail systems to better serve the community.

The master plan was created by Edminster, Hinshaw, Russ and Associates, who utilized a variety of platforms to collect resident input for the project. Online survey data showed the availability of more paths will generate an increase in trail usage by 23 percent, espcially among cyclists who would be more inclined to bike the trails. Open-ended questions highlighted an overall desire for a pedestrian lifestyle in the community. According to the master plan, almost all respondents would like to be connected to services such as grocery and retail stores, gyms, bars and restaurants. Additionally, they would like to be able to access other parks through the trails, as well as friends and neighboring areas.

Accessibility is clearly key, but the master plan extends beyond where the trails end. Many people complained the current trails are difficult to access, prompting the master plan to include better signage, more maps and easily accessible parking areas. It also includes features and amenities that promote safety, ranging from better trail lighting and emergency boxes to better signage and clear paths for cyclists.

While it doesn’t include budget information, the plan offers suggestions for possible sources of funding such as state and federal programs. Enhancing existing trail segments that fall within specific utility districts would be the responsibility of those specific districts, while outlying areas would require some form of either private or public funding.

The completed master plan encompasses all aspects necessary to encourage a healthier and greener lifestyle for the northwest Houston community. With it, stakeholders, residents, local businesses and organizations can now make decisions that will make these exciting enhancements a reality.
