Join Lone Star College-CyFair for the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) workshop featuring Houston Chronicle nature columnist Gary Clark and including a nature campus birding tour Feb. 14.
The LSC-CyFair event will coordinate with the national Great Backyard Bird Count celebration, an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are, which helps scientists get the “big picture” about what is happening to bird populations.
“With the lake flowing through the college property and our outdoor learning center, our campus and immediate environment has long been a great bird gathering site, for a resident bald eagle, year-round osprey and birds indigenous to the Katy Prairie,” said LSC-CyFair’s Division II Dean of Math, Science and Engineering Dr. Claire Phillips. “But with the creation of the Towne Lake subdivision and the new lake in the Horsepen Creek Park from our Barker Cypress campus, we now have an interconnected waterway system that is attracting different bird species.”
Following the 9 a.m. workshop with Clark in the Center for Academic and Student Affairs, room 110, Division II faculty familiar with LSC-CyFair’s bird species will lead enthusiasts on a 10 a.m. nature walk around campus where 176 bird species have been sighted.
